Hiya, I’m Kelly, and I run Ty Enfys coffee shop in Colwyn Bay, a community enterprise project where you can receive support and pop in for a cosy cuppa, especially in these winter months!
I’m also involved with support at Cornerstone: Albert Place, with everything from helping people settle in during the moving-in process to providing support for 4–5 residents, helping with benefits, and much more.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job role?
Seeing families come into our coffee shop/community space.
We’ve had mums discover they can get help with benefits, Rent Smart Wales, even parenting advice, just from popping into the café.
What Makes Sanctuary Trust Different?
Sanctuary is different because it’s more relaxed and provides great trauma-informed support. There’s no formal, stiff atmosphere here. It’s informal, warm, and really supportive. Staff can be honest about needing help, and so can the people who come through our doors.
What Do You Wish People Knew About People Struggling with Substance Misuse/Housing Issues?
Sometimes we run recovery groups in the café, and people judge those struggling because of the stigma. Everyone deserves support when they need it. They are no different to anyone else-mums, dads, neighbours, and friends. The people we reach out to are just normal people dealing with tough stuff.
What small thing keeps you going through the work day?
I want to say lots of tea! But honestly, it’s the regular kids who come through the café.
Ty Enfys is a safe place, and the kids get to know us as safe adults in their world.
Advice for Day One with The Sanctuary Trust
Residents and customers at the café should know that they’re not alone. There is always staff around, ready to support you.
